City Breaks
The 48-Hour Fix: Why a City Break is the Ultimate Travel Power-Up!
So, What's the Big Deal About a City Break?
Forget spending 14 days glued to the same sun lounger. The city break is the glorious, high-speed sprinter of the travel world—it’s a short, sharp, concentrated blast of pure adventure. It’s about diving head-first into a new culture, armed with nothing but a carry-on bag, a decent pair of shoes, and a massive appetite for, well, everything.
I’ve lost count of the city breaks I've taken, and here's what I've learned: a city is a living, breathing thing. It’s the grand, 'pinch-me' moments like seeing the Eiffel Tower sparkle for the first time, but it’s also the quiet, insider secrets—the tiny, family-run bakery that’s been making the same pastry for 100 years, the hidden rooftop bar with the killer view, or just finding the perfect bench to sit and watch the world go by. It’s a full-on cultural espresso shot!
It’s not about the length of the trip, it’s about the depth of the adventure.
There’s a special kind of magic to a city break. It’s the thrill of waking up somewhere completely new on a Friday morning and being back in your own bed by Sunday night, your head spinning with new sights, sounds, and flavours. It’s the ultimate battery-recharge, and here’s why I think they’re simply the best.
It’s a Culture Hit, Fast!
You don’t need two weeks to find the soul of a place. In 48 hours, you can see world-class art in a famous gallery, explore an ancient castle, hear a totally new language, and eat food that will genuinely change your life. It’s a full-immersion experience, concentrated into one perfect, bite-sized weekend.
The Sheer Joy of Packing Light
Forget massive suitcases and endless check-in queues. The city break is the art of packing light! Everything you need fits in a bag that goes straight on the plane with you. You land, you're out of the airport in ten minutes, and your adventure starts immediately. It’s liberating, and it means you're always ready to move.
You Can Do It All the Time!
This is the best part! Because you're only gone for a couple of nights (and often don't even need to book a day off work), you can do it more often. You can sprinkle these little adventures throughout your year, giving you a constant stream of things to look forward to, rather than waiting all year for one big holiday.

My Little Black Book of Brilliant City Breaks
I’ve got my favourites, from old classics to far-flung adventures. The beauty of a city break is that it can be a two-hour flight or a ten-hour adventure. Here are three I think are just perfect for a weekend blast.

Prague, Czech Republic: The Fairytale You Can Walk In
Prague is my go-to for anyone who wants to feel like they’ve stepped inside a storybook. Forget the main square; my tip is to get up at sunrise and walk across the Charles Bridge. It’s just you, the statues, and the mist rolling in from the river. Spend your days getting lost in the cobbled alleys, drink the best beer in the world for pennies, and don’t miss the incredible, bizarre, clockwork show of the Astronomical Clock.

Lisbon, Portugal: The Capital of Effortless Cool
Oh, Lisbon... I’ve lost my heart to this city more than once. It’s a gorgeous, hilly jumble of pastel-coloured buildings, rattling yellow trams, and soulful Fado music drifting from tiny bars. My insider secret? Ditch the famous tourist lift and head to a miradouro (viewpoint) like Miradouro da Senhora do Monte. Grab a small kiosk beer, watch the sun set over the terracotta roofs, and just breathe. And you MUST eat a Pastel de Nata (custard tart)... or five.

New York City, USA: The Weekend That Never Sleeps
You think NYC is too far for a weekend? Think again! The 'Red-Eye' flight is your secret weapon. You sleep on the plane, land early, and boom—you have three full days in the greatest city on earth. Yes, see the Statue of Liberty (my tip: take the free Staten Island Ferry for the best view!), but the real NYC is in the neighbourhoods. Walk the High Line, grab a bagel in the West Village, and see a show on Broadway. You’ll come back absolutely shattered, but totally electrified.
The City Breaker’s Cheat Sheet
01
Walk 'Til You Can't Walk No More!
The best way to find a city’s secrets is on foot. Ditch the Tube map for an afternoon and just wander. Get lost. That's when you’ll stumble upon the hidden courtyard, the amazing street art, or the little shop you’ll talk about for years.
02
Master the 'One Big Thing' Rule
Don't try to see 10 museums in two days. You’ll just be tired, grumpy, and you won't remember any of it. My rule is one big ticket item per day (like the Colosseum or the Louvre), and leave the rest of the day for spontaneous exploring.
03
Ask a Barista, Not the Concierge
Want to know where the best, non-touristy dinner spot is? Don't ask your hotel concierge (they'll send you somewhere "nice"). Go into a cool, independent coffee shop, order a flat white, and ask the person making it where they go for dinner. They will never, ever steer you wrong.
04
Eat the Street
My first stop in any new city is the main food market (like La Boqueria in Barcelona or the Grote Markt in Rotterdam). It’s the city's stomach, and it’s the best way to see, smell, and taste what the place is really all about. Grab a snack and just soak in the chaos.
05
Eat Big at Lunch, Snack at Night
In many European cities (like Rome or Madrid), the big, fancy restaurants offer amazing-value set lunch menus ('Menu del Giorno' or 'Menú del Día'). Have your main meal then, and in the evening, do as the locals do and hop between bars having small plates and drinks.
06
Stay Central, Even if it Costs More
For a short break, time is your most precious currency. Don't waste it commuting from a cheap hotel on the outskirts. Spend that little bit extra to be in the heart of the action. You'll save a fortune on taxis and, more importantly, you can just step out of your door and be there.
Pack Your Bag, the City is Calling!
A city break isn't just "a short holiday." It’s a concentrated dose of life. It’s a way to feel like an explorer, an art critic, a foodie, and a local, all in one whirlwind weekend. It’s about the joy of discovery and the thrill of a new stamp in your passport. So go on, book that flight—the perfect 48 hours is waiting for you.
