Spain

More Than Just Sunshine and Sangria!

Hola! Welcome to the Real Spain

Prepare to fall head-over-heels for a country that lives life in full colour.

Forget everything you think you know about Spain. This isn't just a place for a fly-and-flop beach holiday (though, let's be clear, they have glorious beaches). This is a country stitched together with passion, history, and a flair for living the good life. It's the scent of orange blossom in Seville, the hush of a 1,000-year-old palace in Granada, and the electric buzz of a Madrid street at midnight.

I've lost count of how many times I've been, and every single trip I find something new to adore. Whether you're an art lover, a total foodie, or just someone who wants to feel the sun on your face, Spain delivers. It’s a place where you don’t just see the culture, you feel it, you taste it, and you hear it in the strum of a guitar.

Climate and Best Time to Travel

Spain is a country of contrasts! The north (like Bilbao) is lush and mild, while the south (Andalusia) sizzles in summer. My golden rule? Visit in spring (April-June) or autumn (September-October). The weather is gorgeous, the crowds are smaller, and you won’t melt while exploring. The south is lovely even in winter, but I'd avoid inland Madrid or Seville in August unless you really love 40°C heat!

Oh, the Food! (My Favourite Part)

Spanish dining is all about sharing, socialising, and taking your time. The real magic is in the tapas. Here's my top tip: don't sit down for a big meal at one place. Do a 'tapeo' (tapas crawl) – hop from bar to bar, having one small dish and a short caña (beer) or glass of vino at each. Your must-try delicacy? Jamón Ibérico de Bellota. This acorn-fed cured ham is a melt-in-your-mouth marvel that will ruin all other ham for you, forever. It's that good.

The Culture: Passion, Passion, Passion

The Spanish vibe is pasión. It’s in the raw, foot-stomping emotion of a flamenco dancer, the roar of the crowd at a football match, and the fiery debates in a tapas bar. Life is lived loud, late, and with family and friends at the centre of everything. Embrace the siesta – the country really does slow down mid-afternoon – and prepare to eat dinner at 10 pm. It's not a holiday; it's a lifestyle you borrow for a week.

Four Places, Four Ways to Find Spain's Soul

You can't see it all in one trip, but these experiences will get you straight to the heart of the country.

(Granada) Wander a Real-Life Fairytale at The Alhambra

Perched on a hill, the breathtaking Alhambra Palace is not just a building; it's a mesmerising maze of intricate tilework, whispering fountains, and ridiculously beautiful courtyards from the Moorish kingdom. My insider tip: you MUST book your ticket months in advance. Go for the earliest morning slot to see the gardens (the Generalife) in the soft light before the crowds arrive.

(Barcelona) Get Lost in Gaudí's Whimsical Wonderland

Barcelona is the city of Antoni Gaudí, and his playful, nature-inspired buildings are like nothing else on earth. Of course, you have to see the staggering, still-unfinished Sagrada Família. But my personal favourite is Park Güell, where you can sit on mosaic benches and look out over the entire city. It feels like stepping inside an artist's imagination.

(Seville) Feel the Heat of Authentic Flamenco

Seville, the capital of Andalusia, is the birthplace of flamenco, and you can't leave without experiencing it. Skip the big, flashy tourist shows. My advice is to head to the Triana neighbourhood, cross the river, and find a tiny, packed 'tablao' (flamenco bar). You'll be shoulder-to-shoulder, sipping sherry while a guitarist and singer pour their entire souls out. It's raw, powerful, and utterly unforgettable.

(Madrid) Live Like a Local in the 'Golden Triangle of Art'

Madrid is the thumping heart of Spain, a city that truly never sleeps. While the nightlife is legendary, the art is world-class. Spend a day exploring the 'Golden Triangle': the Prado (for classical masters like Goya), the Reina Sofía (home to Picasso's staggering Guernica), and the Thyssen-Bornemisza (a brilliant mix of everything else). It’s the best art history lesson you’ll ever have.

Master the 'Menu del Día'

Want to eat like a king on a budget? At lunchtime (around 2 pm) on a weekday, look for the 'Menu del Día' (Menu of the Day). For about €12-€15, you'll get a starter, a main, a dessert or coffee, and a drink (yes, often including wine!). It's the biggest travel bargain in Spain.

Get Lost in a Local 'Mercado'

Forget the supermarket. Head straight to the local market, like the Mercado de San Miguel in Madrid or La Boqueria in Barcelona. It’s a full-on sensory assault. Grab a stool at a tiny bar inside, order some fresh gambas al ajillo (garlic prawns), and just soak in the glorious chaos.

Embrace the 'Paseo'

In the early evening, just before dinner (around 8 pm), an amazing thing happens: everyone in town comes out for a paseo (a leisurely stroll). Families, old couples, friends—they all dress up a little and wander the main plazas. It's not about going anywhere; it's about seeing and being seen. Grab a gelato and join in.

Ditch the Main Square, Find a 'Plaza'

The 'Plaza Mayor' (main square) in any big city is often beautiful but full of tourist-trap restaurants. My advice? Walk two streets away and find a smaller, hidden plaza packed with locals. The food will be better, the prices will be cheaper, and the atmosphere will be 100% authentic.

So, What Are You Waiting For?

Spain is waiting to charm, feed, and inspire you.

Spain is more than just a destination; it’s an experience that gets under your skin. It’s a country that reminds you to slow down, to savour your food, to talk to strangers, and to stay out a little later than you planned. You’ll come home with a suitcase full of memories (and probably some olive oil) and, I promise, you’ll already be planning your next trip back.
