Mauritius

The Dodo’s Gone, But the Magic is Everywhere!

Hello, Paradise! (The Real Version)

Get ready to fall for an island that’s so much more than just a pretty beach.

When you close your eyes and picture 'paradise', I’m willing to bet it looks a lot like Mauritius. We’re talking water so blue it looks photoshopped, sand as soft and white as flour, and coconut palms swaying in a gentle breeze. It’s the screensaver that came to life, and I’ve been lucky enough to visit this gem more times than I can count.

But here’s my secret: the postcard-perfect beaches are just the beginning. The real Mauritius is found away from the sun lounger. It’s in the lush, volcanic, emerald-green mountains that burst from the centre. It’s in the sizzling street food stalls of a chaotic market, in the soulful rhythm of the Sega music, and in the incredible, genuine warmth of the people. This island is a gorgeous melting pot of African, Indian, Chinese, and French cultures, and the result is pure magic.

Climate and Best Time to Travel

Mauritius is a tropical dream year-round, but it has two seasons. Summer (our winter, from November to April) is hot, humid, and can bring cyclones. My golden rule? Go during their 'winter' (May to October). The sun is still glorious, the days are beautifully warm (think mid-20s°C), there's almost no humidity, and the sea is crystal clear. It's as close to perfect as weather gets.

The Tastiest Island in the Ocean

The food here is a world tour on a plate! It’s a fabulous mix of Indian curries, delicate French sauces, Creole rougaille (a rich tomato stew), and Chinese-inspired fried noodles. My number one must-have delicacy isn't in a fancy restaurant. It's the Dholl Puri. Head to any market (Port Louis is the best) and find a stall selling these. It’s a warm, thin, savoury pancake, filled with a delicious split-pea curry and various chutneys. It costs pennies and, I promise, you'll be back for seconds.

The Culture: A Vibe Called Morisien

The soul of Mauritius is its harmony. This is one of the most peaceful, multicultural places on earth, where Hindu temples, mosques, and churches sit happily side-by-side. The vibe is gentil (kind), relaxed, and incredibly welcoming. You’ll feel the island’s passion in the Sega—a dance born from the island's African slaves. It’s all shuffling feet, swaying hips, and a thumping drumbeat that tells the story of their past, and it’s pure, infectious joy.

Beyond the Sun Lounger: Four Unforgettable Adventures

This is where you’ll find the real Mauritius, from the city to the peaks.

(Port Louis) Dive into the Colourful Chaos of the Central Market

The capital, Port Louis, is a whirlwind of life, and its heart is the Central Market. Forget a quiet browse; this is a full-on sensory experience! One hall is piled high with tropical fruits you’ve never heard of, another is a mountain of fragrant spices, and a third is where you’ll find the famous street food. My tip: go in the morning, be brave, and try everything.

(Le Morne) Hike a Mountain That Holds a Powerful Secret

That majestic, towering mountain in the south-west isn't just a pretty backdrop. Le Morne Brabant is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a symbol of freedom that was once a sanctuary for runaway slaves. You'll need a guide (and an early start!) to hike it, but the 360-degree view from the top—looking out over the turquoise lagoon—is one of the most moving and beautiful sights on earth.

(Grand Baie) Sail Away on a Catamaran for the Day

The north of the island, around Grand Baie, is where the buzz is. It’s the perfect place to live out your millionaire fantasies by chartering a catamaran for the day. You’ll sail north to the stunning, uninhabited islands like Ilot Gabriel, snorkel in water that’s clearer than a swimming pool, and enjoy a fresh barbecue on deck. It’s the classic 'paradise' day out for a reason.

(Chamarel) See Earth in Technicolour (and Drink Rum!)

This is the famous "touristy" bit, and it's 100% worth it. In the south-west hills, you'll find the Seven Coloured Earths, a patch of sand dunes swirled with different natural colours. After you’ve snapped your photos, visit the nearby Chamarel Waterfall (it’s stunning!), and then, my top tip: head to the Rhumerie de Chamarel (rum distillery). The rum tasting is fantastic—Mauritian rum is a world-class secret!

Hunt for the "Underwater Waterfall"

This is one of the most amazing things I've ever seen. From the sky, it looks like a giant waterfall... under the sea! It’s actually a mind-bending optical illusion created by sand and silt. You can’t see it from the beach; you need to take a helicopter tour (a splurge, but worth it!) from the south coast to truly appreciate this natural marvel.

Find Your Zen at Ganga Talao

Head inland to Grand Bassin, a sacred crater lake that is the most important Hindu pilgrimage site outside of India. You’ll be greeted by a 108-foot-tall statue of Lord Shiva, and the air is thick with the scent of incense. It’s an incredibly peaceful and spiritual place. My tip: be respectful, take off your shoes, and just soak in the serene atmosphere.

Kayak Through a Mangrove Forest

While everyone else is on the main beaches, get a different perspective. I love renting a kayak (try the east coast around Trou d'Eau Douce) and paddling quietly through the mangrove forests. It's a protected haven for birds and fish, and it feels like you're a million miles away from the modern world. It's a proper adventure.

Don't Just Watch the Sega, Dance It!

You'll see a Sega show at your hotel, for sure. Don't just sit there and clap! The performers love it when you join in. The dance is all about telling a story with your hips and hands (your feet barely leave the ground). It’s impossible to do it without smiling. Go on, give it a try—it’s the perfect way to connect with the island's joyful soul.

So, Are You Ready for Real Paradise?

(Spoiler alert: Yes, you absolutely are!)

Mauritius is that rare place that's not just for honeymooners. It's for adventurers, for foodies, for families, and for anyone who just needs to recharge in a place of genuine warmth. You’ll come for the beaches, but you’ll leave with memories of the incredible people, the punchy rum, and the stunning green mountains. It’s paradise, but with a whole lot of personality.
